i live in a tiny neighborhood with a lot of diversity around how we all like to hang out. One neighbor gets great satisfaction when we come over to watch shows and will barely come to any public event, he hates them, another we work together on the garden and another we sometimes stop on the road to say hi…since we all live in a very bossy canyon it is the land that always pulls us together, who saw what predators, whats going on as far as road maintenance, water in the creek, fire season - its all very close. and it really ties us together so I’m not surprised that food has helped tie you into your place of belonging, it can be so hard when we dont have loud land to help us all connect.

the chalk bucket was a lovely thought and i will see what creative endeavors I can bring into our canyon….

Thanks so much for this, Natasha! You give such a beautiful description of your community. I love that your one neighbor feels OK with letting you know he hates public events. I have not yet conveyed this to my relatively new neighbors. When I avoid parties, my husband just says “She’s a writer.” 😂

I am a born and bred Pacific Northwester and lived in the Skagit Valley for over 30 years while raising our family. Yes! The land was so vocal- the floods, the winds, the fires- not to mention the coyotes stalking our animals and the black bear we found our Pomeranian trying to corner one morning, the two fawns we had to rescue from our pond. Appreciate these memories!

Hawaii is outspoken also with volcanos erupting, high winds, fires. Stating the obvious, building a community takes time spent navigating similar experiences.

Some of my stronger bonds here are with other gardeners transplanted to an entirely different environment- supporting each other through our difficulties and wins.

I love your loud land insight and look forward to hear about any new creative community endeavors in your canyon!🙏

Im hailing from a long stint on camano island and we have a couple of friends in common, nessa and erin ;) and I believe a long time ago I was lucky enough to join one of your yoga classes! And although i loved that region i didn’t know my neighbors as there was simply no reason to. and I was busy with my life as were they. So its a delight that to explore reasons to connect with neighbors and build community in place! Great to connect with you here as well Heidi.

Wow- such a small world. Funny how we passed each other and are connecting now. Herbal medicine is fascinating to me! I have searched for classes here in Hawaii to no avail. Gardening in the tropics is a whole different animal from Western Washington!

I know as I get older I am contemplating community creation more than I did when life was busier. In those householder years, community seemed more available- work, school etc.

Your posts make me want to come back more often- especially in the summer! Thanks for chiming in here!♥️

Love this and would thoroughly receive being a part of your Love Language. Joy! That is the way. Whatever brings us JOY. I know it sounds cliche. But it's true!

I love that you differentiate between being social and being in community. Important!

Thanks, Heidi!

Cliche is great for me right now!

Not putting your head in the sand re energy happening in the world right now, but also enjoying the life happening in front of us at this moment.

I am reminded of Carlos Castaneda’s advice re dreaming which is to follow the bright bird flying through your dream to see where it takes you. Of course, if you can.

Much love, Erin. Thank you for your comment!

There we go!

It's easy:

Tuesdays we share Mangos

and Fridays we do Tomatoes 😇

Wasn't hard after all 😂.

Amazing quote:

“I love humanity, but I hate people.”

Edna St. Vincent Millay

What an interesting mess, this 'me'-voice.

In the end it's just a tiny misunderstanding.

"It takes a Universe to make a sandwich."

The tiny difference between heaven and hell is the discernment between thinking and being; between 'me' (mind-stuff) and 'I am' (Presence). Super subtle, and so embarrassing because we overlooked it our whole life. Embarrassment, shame, pride, guilt, faulty thinking, makes us run away from what we actually long for. 🥰

We cannot become what we eternally are, but we love to 'do' to be someone?

Mr Jesus: "Don't resist evil, go the extra mile, give the other cheek, forgive never-endingly." Blah blah blah?

I see myself living in a small village; lots of privacy/nature, and friends not intimidated by their own thoughts and feelings.

Time doesn't heal any wounds, but understanding does.

Love this! Thank you, Holger.

“We cannot become what we eternally are, but we love to ‘do’ to be someone.”

All the endless forcing of doing the ‘right thing’, the ‘moral’ thing etc etc. It’s such a relief to see the pointlessness of this (if you can!)

I am grateful to have ended up on the side of a mountain with lots of birdsong and relatively few people. I agree that time doesn’t heal- I would also add quiet to the list of things that have.

I appreciate and value your comments🙏
